Suffolk County New York Snake Situation: Hi i have just read you're page on snakes and i must disagree in some cases the snake is the aggressor especially when it comes to cotton mouths and water moccasins you see i live in the south of Long Island in Suffolk County and there is a very large population of those to snakes and i happen to live close to a swamp and pond that i fish in so naturally i wanted to kill them thus eliminating potential threats over the past four years i have killed over 109 snakes and the majority of them were moving towards me and i found you're page misleading to the unknowing and unexperienced person most of the time it is much safer to either shoot them or find a long stick and beat them with it i know i could call animal control but that'd be a heck of a bill to pay to remove 100+ snakes from a pond and swamp but another reason i kill them is because the swamp is less than 50 yards from a subdivision and I've been told by many that they've found water moccasins in their swimming pools and they were very aggressive I've had baby ones no longer than six inches try to come after me on an atv so i ask would you please re write you're page to help the people who have no experience with snakes and also give identifying details such as poisonous snakes have diamond shaped heads while non poisonous have round and also my uncle was bitten by a chicken snake and he had to go to the hospital because it got infected even though it was kept clean so also please tell about that sincerely.
I have a basement home and we have a "Black Racer" (I think) in here with no way of knowing where it is hiding. My wife is scared to death of anything that even looks like a snake. She was sitting in the living room this afternoon,,, and saw it sliding across an overhead rafter. She says she doesn't want to be in here if it is!! Is there anything we can do to make it not want to be here? This snake showed up by my front door & he won't leave. I am in Dayton, Ohio. Can you tell me please what kind of snake it is, does it bite & how can I run him off? Thank you.
